Peppers, Flowers and Coffee

14” x 11”
Pastel painting on warm taupe Somime Pastel Mat
| unframed

On a warm August morning, I walked into the kitchen for a cup of coffee to start my day and found this basket of bell peppers and zucchini squash left over from a batch of Texas Caviar that I’d made the day before for a Potluck Luncheon with Tucson Pastel Society.

The green pitcher full of flowers just happened to be sitting beside them, and it struck me as a bright, cheerful greeting into another summer day. The only light on this subject was streaming in from the kitchen window.

Baltu

14” x 12”
Pastel painting on pink Clairefontaine Pastelmat

I painted this handsome fellow for a friend of mine who raises and shows Afghan Hounds. His name is Baltu.

I have always loved animals and spent many happy hours as a child drawing the animals on my grandfather’s farm. Animals are still one of my favorite subjects.

This painting is not for sale, but if you have a cherished pet that you would like to have a portrait of, I would be happy to paint that for you. All that is required is a photo, or two of the animal to work from.

Two of my paintings have been juried into the Tucson Pastel Society’s Pastel Expressions Show at the Tucson Desert Art Museum Four Corners Gallery, Santa Fe Square, 7000 E Tanque Verde, Tucson, AZ.  They will be on display from Sept. 30 to Oct. 25, 2026.  The Reception and Awards Announcement, which I will be attending, is on Oct. 3, 2026 from 2 – 4 p.m.  Please if you’re in the area, come see the show

Red Hat

14”x11” $700 Pastel painting, framed size, 17”x14”

The subject for this painting is one of my favorite hats with a gold dragonfly pin, my shoes and sunglasses.  All of these objects are old and comfortable.  They feel like they belong together.  It’s like a self-portrait.

Though shown here unframed, it will be framed in the show.

Singing Bowl & Dragonfly Lamp

9.25” x 11.75” $500 Pastel Painting, framed size 12.25” x 11.75”

This is the fourth painting in my “Favorite Things” series. As in the painting above, it offers a look into some of my life and passions. There are dragonflies and musical instruments scattered all over my house.
Though shown here unframed, it will be framed in the show.

Witch on the Wind

9.4”x12.6” Soft Pastel on dark blue Canson Velvet $300 unframed signed on the back

I started this abstract as an emotional image of a monsoon thunderstorm that was raging outside my studio window at the time. It was only 6:30 p.m., but the dark, heavy clouds made it seem like the middle of the night. With rain hammering at the window and thunder and lightning flashing all around, and the wind whipping tree branches up against the side of my house, I was doing my best to stay calm and let the storm know that I would appreciate it leaving my home and property intact. When the rain let up a bit I gave up on painting and went outside to sit on my porch and just appreciate the beauty of the storm that was now hitting south of me about 5 miles. I finished the painting the following morning, though I still didn’t have a name for it until I took it off the board, set it up against the wall, and walked away. From across the room, when I looked back at it, I saw her clearly: her face, her hat, her shoulders, and hair all blowing in the wind. The title came to me: Witch on the Wind.
When I went outside later, the rain gauge measured 3″ of rain. In Tucson, AZ, we expect to get about 10″ of rain a year. Getting 3″ in just one night is unheard of. Most everything on my property was where it was supposed to be, but the dirt road leading up to my gate had washed away. I wouldn’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
